Hernia is the projection of an organ or tissue to an unusual location, through an anomalous opening. There are several types of hernia, but for example, with an inguinal hernia, the intestine can become trapped outside the abdominal cavity (incarcerate), causing a life-threatening intestinal obstruction. It can also strangle and in this case there is a reduction in the blood supply at the herniated site which can necrotize, generating a medical emergency to operate the affected region.
