Cloves contain an active compound called eugenol which is said to have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. Cloves are also rich in antioxidants, fatty acids, fibre and a variety of micronutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin K, iron, manganese and potassium. Antioxidants play an essential role in healthy by neutralising free radicals and preventing oxidative stress. Free radicals are toxins that form in everyone’s bodies and oxidative stress happens when there are too many free radicals. Oxidative stress can cause harm by increasing your risk for various conditions and inflammation. In addition, antioxidants can also help to protect the hair from oxidative damage, which is why clove extract is used in many shampoo’s and hair serums. Cloves have been said to promote hair growth, add hair shine, delay premature greying, treat dandruff, reduce hair loss and soothe the scalp. It is important to note however, that while the proposed benefits are extensive, there is very little evidence proving the efficacy thereof. Cloves are also unlikely to cause any harm to your hair. Therefore, there is no harm trying out shampoo’s and hair serums with clove extract and seeing how it works for you.
