Benefits
- Watermelon contains a very high amount of water making it less energy dense compared to other fruits. For individuals looking to decrease their bodyweight it can be a great sweet alternative. In an experiment in obese and overweight adults 2 cups of watermelon caused greater satiety and a decrease in BMI and blood pressure compared to an isocaloric meal of cookies (Lum et al. 2019)
Possible Side Effects
- Watermelon contains 3 main allergens: profilin, malate dehydrogenase and triosephosphate isomerase. These allergens cause allergic reactions to some individuals with symptoms that include hives, itchy lips or tingly lips and may lead to anaphylactic shock.
