Costochondritis : What is it & treatments

An inflammation of the connective tissue where the ribs attach to the breastbone (sternum). Characterized by dull to sharp pain at the front of the chest wall that may radiate to the back or abdomen.

Pain and tenderness in the chest (breast bone), pain in the ribs are the common symptoms.

Caused by physical trauma, infection or inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.

There is no specific test or diagnostic method to check for costochondritis. Mainstays of diagnosis involve physical examination. Tests are performed to rule out other conditions,

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): For mild to moderate pain.

Ibuprofen . Naproxen

Narcotics: To provide relief of severe pain.

Codeine . Hydrocodone . Acetaminophen

Antibiotics: To treat costochondritis caused due to bacterial infection.

Penicillin . Doxycycline

Antidepressants: For chronic pain.

Amitriptyline

Corticosteroids: Given in the form of injection if the individual is unresponsive or if NSAIDs are unsuitable.

Betamethasone . Prednisone
